Mice in Disneyland

Most theme park visitors simply don’t see them, but there they are: only a careful observer will notice that tiny, soft-furred mouse disappearing into a crack in the wall after stealing popcorn from the trash, after drinking some water from the pond.

Curiously, mice, being so widely despised, were chosen to embody an entire franchise universe. One might wonder whether the mice living in the park think of Mickey as a kind of class traitor: the one who left his own kind to become the enemy’s mascot, the chosen one.

Perhaps the real irony of it, is that he became famous (and powerful) for virtues that have always belonged to all mice: adaptability, resourcefulness, and an incurable optimism that brought them to cope with all weathers and situations, no matter what.

And yes, mice are incredibly adaptable animals. They can survive in almost any environment. Wherever there are people, there are mice. They have accompanied us throughout history; one could even call them our first domestic animals, and yet they have somehow remained wild.

But unlike cats and dogs, they are of no obvious use to us. They live between the traps we set for them, finding their own creative ways to survive. Their very existence contradicts our limited logic of usefulness and profit, offering us resistance in an intimate, silent, and deeply heroic way.

This exhibition celebrates that stubborn optimism against all odds. A collaboration between six Spanish-speaking artists living and working in theme park Berlin.
